Need a real estate agent in Houston, TX?

Free introduction to a licensed local agent for buying or selling a home.

Houston is a large, spread-out metro, so a local agent's knowledge of specific neighborhoods and suburbs (and commute times to your job) matters a lot.

Things worth asking a Houston-area agent

  • Flood risk: Ask about the property's flood history and FEMA flood zone, and review the seller's disclosure. Texas sellers' disclosures include flood-related questions. Check maps at the FEMA Flood Map Service Center.
  • Property taxes and MUDs: Texas has no state income tax but relies on local property taxes. Many suburban subdivisions sit in Municipal Utility Districts (MUDs) that add their own tax rate. Ask for the total tax rate, not just the county's. See the Texas Comptroller property tax pages.
  • Deed restrictions and HOAs: The City of Houston has no traditional zoning code; land use is shaped largely by deed restrictions. Ask what restrictions apply.
  • Insurance: Get homeowners (and possibly flood) insurance quotes early — from your own insurance provider; we don't refer insurance.
