Thinking about a move from New York to Texas? Here's a side-by-side look at the money and paperwork differences, using official and public sources. When you're ready, John can connect you with a licensed local agent in Texas.
State income tax
Texas: no state personal income tax. Source: Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.
New York: New York State taxes income on a graduated schedule. For tax years 2021 through 2032 the top rate is 10.90% on taxable income over $25 million, and a further rate cut for taxable income up to $215,400 ($323,200 for joint filers) is being phased in starting with tax year 2026. New York City and Yonkers residents also pay a local income tax. Sources: NY Department of Taxation and Finance, Personal income tax expenditure report (FY 2027); NY DTF, Tax rates and tables.
Property tax
Texas has no state property tax. The Comptroller doesn't collect property tax or set rates; local taxing units (such as the county, city, school district and special districts like MUDs) do. Source: Texas Comptroller, Property Tax Assistance. In New York, property taxes are also local; see the NY Department of Taxation and Finance property tax pages.
Because Texas has no state income tax, local governments lean on property taxes. For any home you're considering, ask your agent for the total tax rate at that address, and don't rely on the current owner's bill, which may include exemptions you won't have yet. If it will be your primary residence, look into the residence homestead exemption. More: Texas property taxes for out-of-state buyers.

Climate
The 2025 statewide average temperature was 67.8°F in Texas and 46.3°F in New York. Texas is a large state with very different regions, from the humid Gulf Coast to the drier west. Plan for summer heat when you look at a home's air conditioning, roof and insulation, and check flood risk for any address on the FEMA Flood Map Service Center. Your Texas driver license and vehicle registration
- Insurance first: Texas requires liability coverage of at least $30,000 per injured person, up to $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage.
- Emissions inspection (some counties): If you live in an emissions county (including Harris, Montgomery, Fort Bend, Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, Denton, Travis, Williamson and Bexar), get a passing emissions inspection at a DPS-certified station before registering.
- Register your vehicle within 30 days of moving, at your county tax assessor-collector's office. Bring your insurance card and proof of ownership (your previous state's registration or title) and complete Form 130-U. The state registration fee is $51.75 ($50.75 base plus $1 for TexasSure), and counties may add fees. New residents also pay a sales tax-related fee on the vehicle, which can be $90 or the difference between your previous state's sales tax and the Texas sales tax.
- Get your Texas driver license within 90 days. You can drive on your valid out-of-state license for up to 90 days after moving. With a valid license from another U.S. state, you surrender it and generally don't need to take the knowledge or skills tests. Your vehicles need to be registered in Texas before you apply.
